Due to be held this weekend this event is definitely worth marking in your calendar for 2022!
Cortona’s Fiera del Rame, del Fiore e del Coccio (flower, copper and
earthenware fair) is always a welcome and cheerful event and usually held on
the first weekend of May. It is held in Piazza Signorelli and via Casali where
stalls displaying new or antique copper and earthenware products are surrounded
by a riot of colour from the 1000’s of flowers and ornamental plants on show.
It really is an experience to witness first hand and something well worth
marking in your calendar for May 2022!
This beautiful, antique climbing rose which has recently started to bud
and flower at home, reminded me that the fair would have taken place this
weekend, but for Covid restrictions (which ironically have just been lifted…for
the moment at least).
This particular rose – which I fell in love with - was exhibited at the
2019 fair by a nursery in Castiglion Fiorentino, owned by the Papini family. They
produce about a 1000 varieties of perennial herbaceous plants and over 300
varieties of roses and are constantly adding to their collection.
For pepperoncino diehards, they also grow and sell over 200 varieties of
pepperoncino from the mild to the 2,200,000 shu Carolina Reaper, which according to the Guiness Book
of records is currently the hottest pepperoncino in the world!!
