SUMMER IS ONE OF CORTONA'S MOST SUGGESTIVE SEASONS ABETTED BY THE BLAZING HEAT CEASING ONLY AT NIGHT...
Morning: Awakening to the cool of the day, revitalised,
accompanied by the sounds of shutters drawn up, deliveries in arrival, shop
fronts being swept, tables and chairs set out in piazzas and the aroma of fresh
ground coffee and cornetti hanging in
the air.
Midday: Shimmering asphalt melting in the blazing
heat, a haze falling across the plains against a constant backdrop of sound
which is the chirping of cicalas.
Sunflowers
turning their faces to the sun as the grapes ripen on the vines and farmers make
summer sculptures of hay across the landscape.
Sunflowers turning their faces to the sun...
Grapes ripening on the vine...
Late afternoon: a feint breeze as the sun starts to drop on
the horizon, shooting its rays towards the town and reflecting off windows in a
symphony of refracted light.
Evening: The cries of swifts, ever more numerous,
contemplating their departure. The evening passeggiata
as the town and its guests descend into the piazzas which, as dusk falls, are
slowly deserted.
Night: the quiet whispering of ancient stone beginning
to cool, ethereal bats, black shadows on a night sky; muted conversations
drifting up from the piazzas; nocturnal gatherings of those unable to sleep in
the heat of the summer.
