PHOTOGRAPHER JEFF CURTO SHARES A COLLECTION OF SUGGESTIVE PHOTOGRAPHS FROM INSIDE THE CITY'S WALLS...
Photographer Jeff Curto, former Chair at the
Society for Photographic Education, Professor Emeritus at the College of Dupage in
Illinois and this year teaching a course for the University of Georgia's Fall
programme in Cortona, has once again shared with us a series photographs - this
time a selection of suggestive photos from inside Cortona town itself.
1.
The
Little Truck that Could - an Ape struggles its way up Via Berrettini. As slow
as he was, my climb was slower.
2. Anyone who has spent any time in Cortona has
at one time or another marveled at a sunset as nightfall approaches over the
valley. This image was made from an apartment on Via Maffei. I liked the way
the lights in Piazza della Repubblica lit up the tower in nearly the same
orange-y hue that the sky had turned and the lights in the valley as they
twinkled on.
3.
The
Madonna in the little chapel outside of San Cristoforo. I have always been
fascinated by the way the light enters through the little window over the door.
It changes position over the seasons, but always casts a beautiful circle of
illumination on the interior.
4.
The
interior of one of my favorite churches in Cortona, San Niccolo. At once rustic
and elegant, it’s always peaceful and welcoming. The painted “windows” on the
left side mirroring the real windows on the left are just so beautiful, as is
the double-sided altarpiece with both sides painted by hometown Renaissance
master Luca Signorelli.
5.
Evening
falls as clouds blanket the valley, with one illuminated monument (don’t know
what it is?) glowing through the cloud cover.
6.
Heading
up Via Santucci through the beautiful arch.
7.
San
Francesco reflected in the window of a classic Fiat 500 parked along Via
Maffei.
8.
When
people ask me if any of Cortona’s streets are steep, I usually just show them
this photograph of Via Berrettini. No further explanation is needed.
