The Marble Caves of Valsora

Carrara

I had seen a famous photo taken by Nicola Bertellotti, of the marble caves of Carrara - and when I passed closed to Carrara on my way to the Cinque Terre, I promised myself that on the return journey, I would stop and have a walk around…and so on Tuesday morning, I exited the motorway and climbed along the roads to the Alpi Apuane…a harsh environment with scattered small villages that were once inhabitated by the marble miners.

The marble of Carrara, famous for its colour, has been used over time by sculptors of importance such as Michelangelo and the altar of the homeland in Rome and has also been exported all over the world.

The caves where I stopped where in the area of Valsora, where there has been an artificial lake created, a bio-lake where live a species of water newt, Tritone and the water creates magnificent reflections and a unique atmosphere.

I took many photos for over an hour and I could see for myself the change that the light of day has and one could stay there for ages observing the new faces and reflections that come with the passing of the day.

If you love the quiet and vast landscapes, reminding me of the moon, it’s a must place to see and one could combine it with a visit the Colonnata, https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonnata_(Carrara) a town close by and famous for its production of lard.
