Civita is a hamlet with less than 20 inhabitants in the municipality of Bagnoregio, in the province of Viterbo, Lazio. It is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

The Belvedere on the Bagnoregio side offers a wonderful view of Civita and many iconic photos are/were taken from here!
Civita is know as ‘the dying city’ as over the centuries there has been constant erosion and landslides.
In 1695, there was a major eartquake, which caused huge chunks of rock to crumble and a gap to form between Civita and Bagnoregio. In the 1920’s a stone bridge was built to reconnect the two. It do not hold and Civita became completely isolated. The bridge was then completely destroyed during in World War II
In 1965, the three hundred meter long bridge was renovated. Even today, you have to cross it on foot to reach Civita. An entrance ticket to the town cost 5€ per person and make sure you bring water in hot weather as the climb is quite hard going.
Civita used to be accessible through five gates but today only the ‘Porta di Santa Maria’ remains. This main entrance depicts two lions holding a human head between their paws in memory of a popular uprising of the inhabitants against their rulers.
The city is originally Etruscan, but its current appearance is medieval. It will come as no curries to the reader that it has served as a backdrop for several films. More than one million tourists visit here every year!
The central square was the forum in Roman times and it is dominated by the facade of San Donato.
Visitors should stroll through the alleys and hidden squares.
Everywhere you will find beautiful views of the surroundings.
And don’t worry…..with so many restaurants nearby, you won’t starve to death!
